Chord Mojo 2: The Ultimate Portable DAC and Headphone Amplifier

The Chord Mojo 2 (released in 2022) is a highly anticipated redesign that incorporates over 20 years of refined digital audio technology. It contains more digital audio expertise than any other compact DAC, resulting in unparalleled sound quality. The new Mojo 2 portable DAC and headphone amplifier is distinctly different from its predecessor.

One of the most noticeable changes in the Mojo 2's appearance is the addition of a fourth round button, which is used to navigate the menu. This is because the Mojo 2 introduces a powerful UHD DSP feature that is easily accessible through the menu button. The UHD DSP offers advanced EQ functionality, allowing users to adjust the audio based on different headphone characteristics, file formats, or personal sound preferences, providing a more enjoyable listening experience.

The most significant change in the Mojo 2 lies in its internal core, which Chord refers to as the "UHD DSP." It is said to be the world's first lossless digital signal processor. In today's digital-savvy world, we see the term "lossless" more than ever, as an increasing number of software and hardware companies strive to achieve perfect digital music reproduction.

Chord's new proprietary 104-bit processor brings some new features to the Mojo 2, most notably tone adjustments across the entire frequency range and four-setting crossfeed, aimed at reproducing a more spacious, speaker-like soundstage. Chord has also worked to improve the Mojo's sound accuracy by eliminating coupling capacitors, introducing new noise shapers, and adjusting its 4e pulse array DAC. The Mojo 2's core still uses an FPGA chip-based computational core that combines digital processing and DAC functions, but with improvements that result in lower noise floor, more transparent sound, and support for higher sampling rate file playback.

Another key element of the Mojo 2's portability has been redesigned: the battery. The Mojo 2 still charges via Micro USB (including a short micro-USB to USB cable, and it's recommended to use a charger capable of at least 2 amps), but there is a new FPGA-based charging system aimed at providing faster, more efficient, and cooler charging. Chord states that the overall capacity has increased by 9%, and battery life is now over 8 hours. To help maintain consistent battery life during the Mojo 2's lifespan, Chord has also improved its smart charging mode, which automatically enters this state when the DAC is connected to a charger for an extended period, preventing overcharging.

The Mojo 2 also adds the currently popular USB-C input, combined with the existing optical, Micro USB, and 3.5mm coaxial (which supports sampling rates up to 768kHz when used with the Chord M-Scaler and dual-data mode). This allows for better integration with Android phones, Apple MacBooks, and even future iPhones.
